Designated a Town of Art & History, Briançon is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List for its Vauban fortifications, unique examples of mountain military architecture in Europe.
Located in the Hautes-Alpes region, the Vauban City of Briançon, perched at an altitude of 1,326 meters, is located at the convergence of five valleys—Haute-Durance, Guisane, Clarée, Ayes, and Cerveyrette. Glaciers, sculptors of the mountains, once carved out this geographical crossroads. A piece of rock, resistant to erosion, was home to the first "highland peoples," the Brigianii. The Romans founded the city of Brigantio, a stopover on the Via Domitia, which connected Italy to Spain. The radiating structure of these valleys provides the city with relatively easy access to the outside world: to Provence, Queyras, Isère, Savoie and what is now Italy. In the Middle Ages, it became a thriving commercial hub, hosting international fairs in the heart of the Alpine massif.
